Dr. Santoro spoke to Time about menstrual irregularities and when it’s time to see a doctor
Prompted by reader demand, Time sought to answer the question, “What does my period say about me?” In other words, what does a normal cycle look like and what symptoms might indicate that I need to make an appointment with an OB-GYN?
Dr. Nannette Santoro, professor and chair of the University of Colorado’s Obstetrics and Gynecology department, outlined several concerning symptoms that women should be mindful of. “Clots are not supposed to form in menstrual blood,” she explains. “If some are showing up in your menses—especially if they’re large, about quarter-sized—that’s a sign of an unusually heavy bleed, which is something you should tell your doctor about.”
