Dr. Amy Markese discusses how women can best handle the different metabolic demands their bodies have while pregnant and breastfeeding.
During pregnancy, a woman’s metabolism increases. These changes in metabolism can continue after delivery depending on the mother’s age, activity level and genetics. As Dr. Markese explains, “An increase in metabolic demand persists throughout the pregnancy and after delivery, especially in breastfeeding moms.”
So how can mother’s prepare their bodies for these changes? Dr. Markese explains, “The best way to handle the natural changes in the body that occur during pregnancy is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet with plenty of lean proteins and vegetables supports good health.”
