Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections passed from person to person via sexual contact (vaginal, oral and anal), genital contact, and contact with fluids (semen, blood and vaginal fluids). Infection can also be transmitted through sharing things like razors, needles or other items that come in contact with bodily fluid or blood.

All sexually transmitted diseases should be diagnosed and treated by a doctor. Sexual partners of people infected with one or more STDs should be seen and treated by a doctor as well.

Symptoms and treatment of STDs vary depending on the kind of disease or infection.

Types of sexually transmitted diseases and infections include:

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is the most frequently reported STD in the U.S. Passed from person to person, it often presents with no symptoms & can be treated with antibiotics.

Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is an STD caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). Symptoms include genital blisters treated with medication.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a very common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacterium. Gonorrhea grows in warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the uterus, cervix, urethra and fallopian tubes.

HIV

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) attacks the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight infection. HIV causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome), which is the last stage of the HIV infection and can be life threatening.

HPV (Human Papillomavirus)

Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. HPV is passed from person to person through genital contact (usually during vaginal or anal sex).

Molluscum

Molluscum contagiousum is a viral skin rash or infection common in children under 12 that causes pearly or flesh-colored bumps that generally aren't painful.

Syphilis

The Syphilis STD is passed from person to person through contact with a sore on the lips, mouth, vagina, anus or rectum. Early stage treatment is penicillin.

Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis (“trich”) is a common STD spread through unprotected sex and found more often in women. Easy to cure, it's treated with oral antibiotics.

Vaginitis Treatment, Causes & Diagnosis

Vaginitis is an infection or inflammation of the vagina causing itching, irritation & abnormal discharge. Types are yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis.
